Over 502 Political Entities have already registered with the IHEC to contest the Governorate Council elections – almost 80 percent of these have been formed since the 2005 elections.
Political entities must register their candidates with the IHEC; as each Governorate Council has a number of seats proportionate to the number of registered voters. The number of seats per council will range from 26 to approximately 58 in Baghdad.
Political entities cannot register more candidates than the number of seats to be allocated to the Governorate Councils. Each candidate will have to be vetted against eligibility criteria by the IHEC and the “De Beatification Commission.” It is expected that up to 30,000 candidates will register.
