Campaign Period

The campaign period is the period just before an election when political entities and candidates can campaign for election. IHEC has issued regulations covering the campaign period to ensure that political entities and the media do not misinform the voting public or stir up sectarian or ethnic rivalries.

The IHEC has also determined a period of ‘campaign silence’ which begins 48 hours before the election. During this period no campaigning may be carried out.
There are several campaign issues that can affect the fairness and integrity of the election. These include the timing of the campaign, ability to campaign freely, the neutrality of electoral officials during the campaign, security for participants, and free access to media. The availability of campaign finance partly determines the nature of the campaign.
